If we took a poll asking businesses to rate their current wireless network, we are confident that the poll would show most users either love their wireless network or they hate it; with very few users in the middle. Why the extremes? Because wireless networking is supposed to be convenient, easy to use, secure, and fast enough. When a wireless network is configured properly and meets all of these expected criteria, users love it! However, when a wireless network does not do what it is supposed to do, users get very frustrated and eventually stop trying to use it.
More often than not, wireless networks do not perform like they are supposed to because they are quickly thrown together with little or no thought to the design or because the installer has very little experience with the application that the wireless network is supposed to be used for. Wireless networks can range in design complexity from very simple single access-point/router/firewall appliances to large wireless mesh networks with seamless client traversal between access points. Their application can be used for simple data transfer, VoIP Phone Systems, hotspots with walled gardens, point-to-point communications between buildings, and more!
